Floradale PS Wins with Green School Idea!!!
Grade 5 and 6 students at Floradale PS won $6000 in Capital Paving's "Greenest School" competition.
In the fall, Capital Paving approached a number of schools in Woolwich and challenged Grades 5 and 6 students to design the ideal green school. The design had to be energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable for years to come.
Students presented their entry in three different formats: first they presented a written description of their project, followed by a constructed model and finally they showed a video presentation about the process of building their project and the creativity involved.
The competition required students to research environmental concepts and present them, which involved reading comprehension, critical thinking skills and presentation skills.
What does Floradale plan to do with the prize money? They would like to step up their recycling program, implement a composting system and put a focus on litterless lunches.
Congratulations Floradale PS!

Going Green with help from the Green Team Floradale's Green Team is made up of a group of students from grades 3 to 6 and a few staff members. We have been working really hard for the past few months to decide how Floradale can be come a more earth-friendly school.
We have decided to work on the following things:
1)Turning off the Computer Monitors at the End of the Day Why? -We want to educate the students to do this at the end of the school day so that we can save energy when they aren't being used.
What have we done? -Made posters for the library -Put stickers on every computer monitor -Mini-presentation to each class on how to do it and why -Use a tally sheet to monitor how well we're doing
2) Good On Other Side (GOOS) Paper Bins Why? -We want students and staff to learn to reduce the amount of paper use by putting paper in the GOOS bins if it can be re-used.
What have we done? -Put GOOS paper bins in each classroom -Mini presentation explaining how the students can use the bins
3) Waste-Audit Why? -To see if we are dispersing of waste in the appropriate bins
What have we done? -Used clear bags to see if the right things are being put into the garbage -Completed sheets to identify what is correctly put in the garbage, and what could be recycled -Started an action plan to address our needs
4) Recycling Jingles Why? -To educate the school on how to recycle properly
What have we done? -Created a competition between the classes to see which class can come up with the best recycling public service announcement -Jingles will be presented over the Announcement system on a regular basis
